Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue Inc.
Who We Are
Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue Inc. is a registered not for profit organisation that rescues lost, abandoned, or neglected domestic birds. We aim to reunite lost birds with their owners, responsibly re-home surrendered, neglected, or abused birds, and educate the public on responsible ownership of these beautiful, intelligent creatures.
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
What We Do
Lost and Found
Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue takes in lost domestic birds and is dedicated to working to reunite them with their correct owners. Birds are scanned for a microchip, and we work with vets, other rescues, and admins of lost bird pages to help find owners. In the meantime, birds get any vet help and treatment they may need and are given a healthy nutritious diet specific for their breed.
Our rescue gets calls weekly of birds that need to be surrendered due to a multitude of reasons. Below are the most common reasons we accept surrenders.
*owners pass away or go into aged care
*owners becomes homeless
*owner can not afford vet bills
*owner moving overseas
*bird has been neglected or abused
Because of the sheer number of people wanting to re-home their birds, we have to turn people away sometimes. We hope to one day have a facility that will allow us to not turn down any unwanted bird.
Adoptions open up space for new birds to be rescued! You can adopt birds through Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue once they are ready for adoption. We don't post our current list of birds because it is always changing and we prefer people to come in and discuss what they are looking for in a bird. Sometimes a bird chooses you and you end up adopting something totally different than what you came in to adopt. So, make an appointment if you are interested in adoption. All birds are vet checked, disease screened, and converted to healthy diets. We are looking for families that understand the commitment of these intelligent, emotional beings and want to give them a New Life as part of their family.
Who is Kiwi? And How did we get our Start?
No, we are not from New Zealand as the name of our rescue may suggest! In fact, Kiwi is actually the name of our first bird, a rainbow lorikeet. We named the rescue after Kiwi as she inspired us to do more for our feathered friends who don't have a voice, the birds who are abandoned, abused, neglected, or lost and found.
We started volunteer work with a wildlife rescue back in 2016 and soon realised that domestic birds had a bit of a disadvantage. There were no well established domestic bird rescues in Victoria at the time. Domestic birds in need were being handed in to wildlife rescues that lacked processes to manage them and support their adoption into new families. We wanted more for these beautiful souls who had no one to truly advocate for them.
In 2019, we registered as a not-for-profit domestic bird rescue, and we continue to this day to provide the best care possible for birds by having them screened for disease and vet checked. We ensure all their medical needs are addressed and transition them to optimal healthy diets. All potential new families are vetted through a stringent process to ensure they will provide the best homes possible.
"No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced."
